Volunteers make a difference
Interested in volunteer work that
changes lives in a positive way and
builds a better Australian society,
why not reach out to newcomers?
Tony White, 69 of Seacliff, has
dedicated the last eight years to
being a volunteer English tutor
with English Language Services
(ELS), TAFE SA. He tutors individual
students in their homes once a week
for two hours with English related
to settlement in the Australian
“I was brought up in Broken Hill
where I learnt a strong sense of
community. The satisfaction from
helping people with an absolute
hunger to learn and who appreciate
any help you give is pretty hard to
top. The stories of many of the
refugees I have tutored through ELS
have been overwhelming,” he says.
One boy, whose parents escaped
from Afghanistan and are still in a
refugee camp in Pakistan, came to
Australia with his brother at fifteen
after spending three years in Nauru
Detention Centre. The boys’ father
had sold everything to give his sons
a chance in life. When Tony began
tutoring this student he was living
with his brother, attending school
full-time and holding down a job
stacking shelves at a supermarket.
“He is the most polite, respectful
young man one could hope to meet,
a credit to himself and an asset to
this country.” said Tony.
Volunteers for tutoring need to
complete an application and then
attend a 5 session training course.
The time commitment is only two
hours a week visiting a student for
assistance with English language
and community settlement.
According to Tony, “Becoming
involved with ELS was the best
present I have given myself and I
would recommend it as a worthwhile
