Easy day trips from Adelaide
Adelaide is perfectly situated if
you’re looking to get away for just
a day during the summer. An hour
and a half drive from the city will
either take you north to the Barossa
Valley or south down the Fleurieu
Peninsula to Victor Harbour.
Heading north into the Barossa
Valley always gives an illusion of
coolness with the grape vines
green and lush all summer. To
really appreciate the scenery,
drive through Gawler, Sandy
Creek, Lyndoch and Roland Flat to
Along the way, you will find dozens
of wineries, many of which have
wonderful local produce on sale to
compliment their trademark wines.
Once you reach the Barossa you
can spend a relaxing time strolling
along the main streets of Tanunda,
Nuriootpa or Angaston, sampling
German style food, or just poking
around antique and specialty shops.
Or, for the more adventurous, the
Heysen Trail beckons walkers to trek
the local countryside in its natural
Vintner’s Sheds on the Angaston
road host a Farmer’s Market every
Saturday morning, and once a
month you will find an Artisan’s
Market at Greenock, just up the
road from Nuriootpa. And of course,
one of our summer highlights is the
Santos Tour Down Under. The 2012
Barossa leg of the Tour is on Friday
When you drive south down to Victor
Harbour there’s no need for an
“illusion” of coolness – chances are
the temperature will drop several
degrees as you near the coast and
the sea breeze kicks in.
You’ll find the Farmer’s Market early
every Saturday morning in the
Grosvenor Gardens, with Kids in the
Kitchen featured at 10am every third
Saturday of the month.
There’s plenty to see and do in and
around Victor Harbour. Or you can
walk across the Causeway to Granite
Island – better yet, evoke the feeling
of yesteryear and take the horse
tram. Once on Granite Island you
can stop at the café for a drink or
wait until dusk and take a penguin
Special dates to remember: The
Victor Harbour Christmas Pageant
will take place on December 17.
The 2012 Victor Harbour leg of
the Santos Tour Down Under is on
Thursday January 19. And February
17 and 18 are the dates for the 10th
Needlecraft Exhibition and Gala
