I have never
before had the
opportunity to do. I also learnt to use
Microsoft Office AND how to maintain
a computer -- changing hard-drives,
RAM and PCI cards (!!!). Currently I
am learning watercolour painting and
expect this course again will give life's
compass another little nudge.
Going back to school
at PWAC has opened
up a wide new phase
of my life. I have
learned so much in my
chosen subjects and
gained many new skills.

By Linda Pyne
My first experience with Para West
Adult Campus (PWAC) was borne
from a need to find employment
after being self employed for many
years, and the realisation that I was
very much out of touch with modern
PWAC offered just what I needed
and I undertook several classes.
Firstly, I enrolled in office studies
and an allied computing course
before studying MYOB (a popular
business and accounting program).
I found that having acquired these
new skills my confidence and self
esteem blossomed -- and I got the
job I was after!
Upon retirement, I enrolled in
community art mosaics classes,
going from beginner level to year
12. I had previously worked as a
potter but my artistic abilities and
confidence had waned over the
years. As community art students,
we worked collaboratively on a large,
three piece mosaic for Playford
Council which is now installed at the
Northern Sound System, Elizabeth.
It was an enormous thrill to attend
the opening ceremony conducted
by the Mayor of Playford and it
was another step towards my self-
fulfillment. As well as giving me
practical skills, this project taught
me how to work well with other
people and to design and produce
work of value.
I am now working at an advanced
level and am currently producing
a mosaic for the Music Centre at
PWAC. With help and encouragement
from staff and the music students,
designing this project has been
a huge boost to my morale. This
project is nearing completion and I
am very proud of it.
This opportunity has brought me
satisfaction, pride in myself and
my new-found skills, and added
confidence in my everyday living.
Classes give new skills, new confidence
